FIVE MAJOR SINS AGAINST THE HOLY SPIRIT

Text: Matthew 12:31-32

Intro: This is a day when there is much discussion on the power of the Holy Spirit, but there is not very much discernment of the Person of the Holy Spirit...

I want us to look at FIVE MAJOR SINS AGAINST HIM.

I.  HE CAN BE BLASPHEMED... Matt. 12:31-32

Mat 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

Mat 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

1. What is this sin? Blaspheme means to speak hurtly of or to ascribe the ministry of the Holy Spirit to the credit of the devil.

2. How is this sin committed? This sin can only be committed by one member of the body, namely the tongue.

3. Who can commit this sin? Since the believer is promised in I John 1:7 that the blood cleanseth from all sins, and since this sin cannot be forgiven or cleansed, then the believer cannot commit this terrible sin.

4. What happens when this sin is committed? Sudden judgement and without any forgiveness.

II.  HE CAN BE LIED TO...Acts 5:1-10

Acts 5:1 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession,

Acts 5:2 And kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it, and brought a certain part, and laid it, at the apostles' feet.

Acts 5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the price of the land?

Acts 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? and after it was sold, was it not in thine own power? why hast thou conceived this thing in thine heart? thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.

Acts 5:5 And Ananias hearing these words fell down, and gave up the ghost: and great fear came on all them that heard these things.

Acts 5:6 And the young men arose, wound him up, and carried him out, and buried him.

Acts 5:7 And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what was done, came in.

Acts 5:8 And Peter answered unto her, Tell me whether ye sold the land for so much? And she said, Yea, for so much.

Acts 5:9 Then Peter said unto her, How is it that ye have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Lord? behold, the feet of them which have buried thy husband are at the door, and shall carry thee out.

Acts 5:10 Then fell she down straightway at his feet, and yielded up the ghost: and the young men came in, and found her dead, and, carrying her forth, buried her by her husband.

Ill.  HE CAN BE GRIEVED...Eph. 4:30, Look at Eph. 4

1. Grieved by our Corrupt Conversation.. .v22-28 This is sins of actions--outward sins.

Eph 4:22 That ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts;

Eph 4:23 And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;

Eph 4:24 And that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness.

Eph 4:25 Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.

Eph 4:26 Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath:

Eph 4:27 Neither give place to the devil.

Eph 4:28 Let him that stole steal no more: but rather let him labour, working with his hands the thing which is good, that he may have to give to him that needeth.

2. Grieved by our Corrupt Communications.. .v29-32 This is sins of attitude--inward sins.

Eph 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Eph 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.

Eph 4:31 Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice:

Eph 4:32 And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.

IV.  HE CAN BE QUENCHED...I Thess. 5:19

1 Th 5:19 Quench not the Spirit.

1. By our ignorance of Him.

2. By our indifference toward Him.

3. By our impatience--not waiting upon Him.

V.  HE CAN BE RESISTED...Acts 7:51, Gen. 6:3

Acts 7:51 Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye.

2. It brings Judgement by death. ..Gen. 6:3

Gen 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

3. It brings Judgement by desertion...Prov. 1:24-26; Hosea 4:17; Isa. 63:10

Prov 1:24 Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded;

Prov 1:25 But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof:

Prov 1:26 I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh;

Hosea 4:17 Ephraim is joined to idols: let him alone.

Isa 63:10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be

their enemy, and he fought against them.
