REPENT OR PERISH

 Luke 13:1-5

Luke 13:1 There were present at that season some that told him of the Galilaeans, whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices.
Luke 13:2 And Jesus answering said unto them, Suppose ye that these Galilaeans were sinners above all the Galilaeans, because they suffered such things?
Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.
Luke 13:4 Or those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and slew them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?
Luke 13:5 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

Intro:  Repentance is an out of date message in most pulpits today.

Yet it is mentioned at 109 times in the Word of God

Repentance was the message of John the Baptist.

Repentance was the first message of Jesus Christ.

Repentance was the last message of the Lord Jesus

Repentance was the first message from Hell.

Repentance was the first message after the ascension.

Repentance was the message preached by Paul.

Repentance was the message to the seven churches.

Repentance is still the message needed in churches of this generation.

Acts 17:30 And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

Luke 13:3 I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish.

II Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

TODAY I WANT TO DEAL WITH THE QUESTION:

"WHAT IS REPENTANCE??????????????

I.       THERE MUST BE CONVICTION

--This is the awareness of sins...

II Cor 7:10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

It is brought to pass by:

1.             Powerful preaching

2.             Prevailing prayer

3.             Personal problems

II.      THERE MUST BE CONTRITION

--This is our attitude because of sin....

1.      A broken heart.....

Psalm  34:18 The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

2.      A broken Spirit....

Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

3.      A broken will......

II Cor 8:12 For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.

III.       THERE MUST BE CONFESSION...

--This is the acknowledging of our sins.

I John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Prov 28:13 He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.

--Bible confession is agreeing with God that he is right and you are wrong...

IV.       THERE MUST BE CONVERSION.....

--This is the "about face" from sin. .

Ezek 33:11 Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?

If a person continues on in his sins, then there is no real evidence of genuine repentance.....
