LOOK AT HIM

Matt. 27:26-36

Intro: Today, by the grace of God I hope we can sit down with them in v.36 and watch the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus Christ. Have a seat on a rock and let's notice some things about his death.

I.    LOOK AT HIS SUFFERINGS. .... .. Physical Sufferings

Isa 50:6 I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Isa 53:4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Isa 53:5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

Isa 52:14 As many were astonied at thee; his visage was so marred more than any man, and his form more than the sons of men:

Psalms 129:3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.

Psalms 22

1. The suffering of the Cup.....Matt 26:36-39

Mat 26:36 Then cometh Jesus with them unto a place called Gethsemane, and saith unto the disciples, Sit ye here, while I go and pray yonder.
Mat 26:37 And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and very heavy.
Mat 26:38 Then saith he unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death: tarry ye here, and watch with me.
Mat 26:39 And he went a little farther, and fell on his face, and prayed, saying, O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me: nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.

Luke 22:44 And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

2. The suffering of the Crowd....Matt 27:26-30

a.        The scourging.....V 26

Mat 27:26 Then released he Barabbas unto them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

b.       The stripping.....V 28

Mat 27:28 And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

c.           The spitting.....V 30

Mat 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

d.       The smiteing......V 30

Mat 27:30 And they spit upon him, and took the reed, and smote him on the head.

3. The suffering of the Crown.....v 29

Mat 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

4. The suffering of the Cross....V 32

Mat 27:32 And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.

II.      LOOK AT HIS SHAME.........Mental Suffering

1. The mockery.......Matt 27:29b

Mat 27:29 And when they had platted a crown of thorns, they put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

2. The mangled body.....Matt 27:35

Mat 27:35 And they crucified him, and parted his garments, casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, They parted my garments among them, and upon my vesture did they cast lots.

3.   The malefactor treatment....John 18:30  They answered and said unto him, If he were not a malefactor, we would not have delivered him up unto thee.

III.     LOOK AT HIS SINS.........Spiritual Suffering

--Not the sins he committed, but the sins he was carrying.....

Matt 27:45-46

Mat 27:45 Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.
Mat 27:46 And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

II  Cor 5:21 For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Isa 53:6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.

I Cor 15:3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

Heb 2:9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels for the suffering of death, crowned with glory and honour; that he by the grace of God should taste death for every man.

I Pet 2:24 Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed.

I Pet 3:18 For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh, but quickened by the Spirit:

Heb 9:28 So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

Let me close with these two final thoughts...

1. Calvary reveals the wickedness of man in his sins and the wrath of God

towards sin.

2. God will judge every man in the light of the cross of the Lord Jesus Christ…
