THE EPISTLE TO THE ROMANS:

An Outline of the Book

 

Introduction: Romans 1: 1-17

The Theme of the Epistle is "God's Righteousness."

This righteousness is revealed in the gospel (1:16, 17).

 

I.   GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IS NEEDED BY US   (1:18 - 3:20)                    SIN

1:18 - 1:32   Mankind has turned from God and Righteousness.

2:1 - 2:16     The Gentiles outside the law, are guilty.

2:17 - 3:8     The Jews, under the law, are also guilty.

3:9 - 3:20     Summary:  The whole world is found guilty.

 

II.  GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IS PLACED UPON US  (3:21 - 5:21)          SALVATION

3:21           It is not by keeping of the law.

3:22,23      It is through our faith  (the medium).

3:24           It is out of God's grace  (the source).

3:24,25      It is because of Christ's death  (the basis).

3:26-31      It is free to Jew and Gentile alike  (the scope).

4:1-25        It is illustrated in Abraham and David  (the examples).

5:1-11        It is followed by many great blessings  (the result).

5:12-21      Summary:  The whole world is offer salvation.

 

III.   GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IS PRODUCED IN US   (6:1 - 8:13          SEPARATION

6:1 - 6:13     Because we died to sin and live unto God.

6:14 - 7:25   Because we died to law and live under grace.

8:1 - 8:13     Because we died to flesh and live in the Spirit.

 

IV.   GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IS SECURED TO US   (8:14 - 8:39        SECURITY

8:14-8:25    Our present sonship and future glory. Can either be lost? How are they made secure to us?

8:26,27       By the intercession of the Spirit.

8:28 - 34    By the sure purpose of the Father.

8:35 - 38    By the changeless love of the Son.

 

V.   GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IS AT WORK FOR US   (Ch. 9-11)      SOVEREIGNTY

Israel had first place. God had righteously set them aside for this age, so that salvation can come to us.

Ch. 9       Israel's election by God in the past.

Ch. 10     Israel's rejection of God in the present.

Ch. 11     Israel's restoration to God in the future.

 

VI.   GOD'S RIGHTEOUSNESS IS DISPLAYED THROUGH US  (Ch. 12 - 16)      SERVICE

Ch. 12, 13    In our spiritual, social and civil lives.

Ch. 14-16  In our Christian fellowship and service.
