DEAD TO SIN—ALIVE TO GOD.
(Romans 6:1-14)
The Epistle thus far has dealt with the sinner and his salvation.
Now the subject concerns the saint and his sanctification.1. AN OBJECTION TO FREE GRACE (6:1).
The greater man's sin is, the greater the display of God's grace
(5:20,21). That being so, "shall we continue in sin that grace may
abound?" (6:1) Does grace encourage sinning?2. THE ANSWER TO THE OBJECTION (6:2-5).
Rom 6:2 "God forbid; "--that is, it is declared to be unthinkable
that we should live sinfully under grace, for the following reasons:
a. BECAUSE WE DIED TO SIN WITH CHRIST.
Rom. 6:2,3 "How shall we that are dead to sin live...there!
He not only died FOR sin (1 Cor. 15:3), but TO sin (Rom. 6:1Cb. BECAUSE WE LIVE TO GOD WITH CHRIST.
Rom. 6:4,5 "as Christ was raised,...even so we also..."
His risen life is beyond sin's touch. We live in Him.
(Water baptism symbolizes these same truths.)3. THE APPLICATION OF THE ANSWER (6:6-13).
The above truths are the basis of victory over sin.
a. BY "KNOWING" THESE FACTS.Rom. 6:6-8 "knowing...our old man is crucified with Him"
Result: V. 7 "he that is dead is freed from sin"
Rom. 6:9,10 "knowing...raised...He liveth unto God"Result: V. 8 "we shall also live with Him"
The death and resurrection of Christ are historical facts;that we died and rose with Him is equally a fact.
b. "RECKON" THEM TO BE FACTS.Rom. 6:11 "reckon ye also yourselves to be dead.. unto sin"
SIN is not dead: WE are dead to it. We are not told to
die to sin, but to reckon (count) it to be already so.
Rom. 6:11 "reckon ye also yourselves...alive unto God"
Not that we "feel" alive unto God; we ARE. Gal. 2:20.
Col. 3:1-3 "If (since) ye then be risen...seek...above"
c. "YIELD" BECAUSE OF THESE FACTS.Rom. 6:13 "yield NOT your members unto sin"
See V. 19 "as ye have yielded" (in the PAST, not now)
Rom. 6:13 "yield yourselves unto GOD". See 1 Cor. 6:20 an
Rom. 12:1 "present your bodies...unto God...service"4. THE RESULT OF THE APPLICATION (6:14).
Rom. 6:14 "sin shall not have dominion over you". Its author
ity is now ended. It once "reigned unto death" (5:21) and actual
brought us to that—death (IN CHRIST). We were raised into a new
realm—free, not TO sin, but FROM it.By David E. Hubbard
