THE CASE OF THE JEW.
(Romans 2:17-3:8)

Because of his position and privilege, the Jew considered himself exe
from God's wrath. Was he?

1. THE SUPERIORITY OF THE JEW (2:17-20).

Rom. 2:17 "Behold, thou art called a Jew".......good heredity

" " "and restest in the law".............. legality

" " "and makest thy boast of God".........religiousness

" 2:18 "and knowest His will"................enlightenment

" " "and approvest the...excellent".......culture

" " "being instructed out of the law".....knowledge

" 2:19,20 "and art...a guide...a light,.......leadership

...instructor...teacher,.."...........and service

NOTE: None of these fine qualities, nor all of them together,
saved the Jew. Nor can they save us. Rom. 2:1; 3:9.

2. THE FAILURE OF THE JEW (2:21-24).

Rom. 2:21,22 They knew, but did not keep. God's law.
Rom. 2:23 They themselves thereby dishonored God.
Rom. 2:24 They caused others to blaspheme God. (Do we?)

NOTE: Failure in ourselves causes failure in others. No one lives
to himself; each life is an influence, good or bad.

3. THE CONSEQUENCE FOR THE JEW (2:25-29).

Rom. 2:25-27 A circumcised, law-breaking Jew, compared with an

uncircumcised, righteous Gentile, is condemed.
Rom. 2:28,29 A true Jew must be one in spirit and flesh.

See Phil. 3:4-7; Rom. 9:6-8.
NOTE: Circumcision was a seal of faith-righteousness (4:11).

A seal without the thing it certifies is of no value at all.
Reality is necessary. Our profession of Christ must be joined
to an actual possession of Christ. Rev. 3:1; 2 Tim. 3:5.

4. THE QUESTIONS OF THE JEW (3:1-8).

Rom. 3:1. IS THERE ANY ADVANTAGE, THEN, IN BEING A JEW?

Ans.: Rom. 3:2. Yes; chiefly, they have the Word of God.

Is it better to be without a guide or with one?

Rom. 3:3. SINCE SOME DISBELIEVE, ARE GOD'S PROMISES CANCELLED?
Ans.: Rom. 3:4. No, God still is faithful. God will keep

His Word whether men believe it or not.

Rom. 3:5. AS GOD IS GLORIFIED THRU SIN, WHY PUNISH SINNERS?
Ans.: Rom. 3:6-8. If God brings good out of evil, that is
to His praise, but still does not justify the evil.

5. SALVATION FOR THE JEW.
Can a Jew be saved at all?
Where does the law come in?
same position as a Gentile?

Rom. 1:16. How? 1 Cor. 15:1-4.
Rom. 10:4. Is the Jew then in the
Rom. 3:9: 10:12,13.
